High senior Callie Womble has been named a Gates Millennium
Scholar. Womble is one of 1,000 students nationwide to receive
the honor. The Gates Millennium Scholars program was
established in 1999 by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The
goal is to promote academic excellency and to provide an opportunity
for outstanding minority students. This eliminates
financial barriers for education.
Womble is the new Miss Teen Essence of Orange County 2008. She
will represent Orange County at the National USA
competition. She is a member of National Achievers Society,
women's soccer team, women's tennis, chorus and secretary
of FUTURES (For Upward Teens Using Resources and Empowering
Self). She gives violin lessons to local neighborhood
children and volunteers for a number of community events and
activities. Her career interests include Alzheimer's
research. She intends to double major in biology and
physhology at Winston-Salem State University.
